What is Public Housing?
The Public Housing program which is referred to Low Rent is a federally funded program that assists low income families with rental assistance. The units are owned by the Housing Authority.
The agency manages 128 public housing rental units encompassed in 6 housing developments across the City of Weslaco under this program.
How do I apply?
An application needs to be submitted on application day. Applications are taken every 2nd Tuesday of the month from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. at 3401 Diamond Blvd. Weslaco, TX. Applications must be filled out in person during application day; all adults of the household must be present at the time of application.
How much do I pay?
Payment: The formula used in determining rental payment is the following:
- 30% of monthly adjusted income (after allowed deductions)
- $50.00 minimum rent
Who is eligible?
Public housing is limited to low-income families and individuals. An HA determines your eligibility based on:
- Annual gross income;
- Whether you qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family; and
- U.S. Citizenship or eligible immigration status
If you are eligible, the HA will check your references to make sure you and your family will be good tenants. The PHA will deny admission to any applicant whose habits and practices may be expected to have a detrimental effect on other tenants or on the project’s environment.
The PHA uses income limits developed by HUD. HUD sets the low income limits at 80% and very low income limits at 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area in which you choose to live. The Income Limits vary from area to area so you may be eligible at an HA but not at another.
